Trine to host first NCAA national championships

By Jillian Craig

Trine University will host an NCAA national championship event for the first time in school history, the 2012 Women′s Golf NCAA Division III Championships. The tournament will start on May 8 and end on May 11.

There will be 21 teams made up of 5 players, and six individual competitors.

According to Trine University’s athletic website, admission to the championships will be free. There will be two flights during three preliminary rounds on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Flights will begin at 8:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.

The championship round will begin at 1 p.m. on Friday, May 11.

There will be an additional driving range located on the back bank of the golf course near the soccer field for all competitors.

Trine University is a great choice for a golf tournament because the course, housing, dining, and nearby additional housing is available all within walking distance of each other, officials say.

The university will house the golfers, coaches and officials in the apartments and they will eat at the university’s cafeteria, Whitney Commons.

Local Angola businesses will benefit from this tournament as parents, siblings, friends will need a place to stay, eat and be entertained.

“We are thrilled that the NCAA has chosen Trine to host this exciting event,” said Trine interim athletic director Rob Harmon. “We have been working with NCAA officials to provide a top notch golfing experience for these excellent athletes.”

The MIAA will not know who is competing in the tournament until after the spring golf season is completed. Some conferences choose who will represent their schools in the fall and some choose the option to wait. Jenny Lymangood, the director of Zollner Golf Course, believes the best demonstration of the talent in each conference is best determined in the spring season.

Officials say Trine is honored to host this year for the NCAA Division III Golf Championships, as it is a long process to be selected and requires meeting several requirements to host. There are many volunteer opportunities and there will be NCAA apparel on sale for spectators, families, golfers and friends.
